Islamabad: Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has appealed to the United States in a television interview to kidnap Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and put him on trial. In an interview with Pakistani news channel Geo TV, Asif also opined that Turkey should also kidnap Netanyahu.
Calling Netanyahu the greatest criminal against humanity, Asif said that the International Criminal Court has also taken action against him. Asif's statement comes just days after the US attacked Venezuela and arrested its president, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife. Both are facing trial in the US.
"Netanyahu should be the most wanted criminal. America should abduct him and put him on trial in its courts. Turkey can also kidnap Netanyahu, and we Pakistanis are praying for that," Asif said.
"In the last 4,000-5,000 years, no community has done to the Palestinians what Israel has done. Netanyahu is the greatest criminal against humanity. The world has not seen a bigger criminal than him," he added.
The Pakistani defence minister also demanded punishment for Netanyahu's supporters.
"What does the law say about those who support such criminals?" he said.
Khwaja Asif’s statements caused vsible discomfort to his interviewer, senior Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir, who interrupted him and said that his statement could also be interpreted as a reference to Trump.
"Khawaja Sahib, I'm taking a break here because you are the defence minister of Pakistan. After hearing your remarks, many people will think you are talking about Trump. I don't know who you are talking about, but I will take a break," Mir said.
In recent months, Pakistan has adopted a softer stance towards Trump and has even praised him on public platforms. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif himself has suggested supporting Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
In this context, the Pakistan defence minister's statement and the anchor's attempts at ‘damage control’ highlight Pakistan's diplomatic constraints. Clips of the interview quickly went viral on social media. While some praised Khawaja Asif's frankness, many questioned whether such statements could create new problems for Pakistan.
